Odessa City Guide

Odessa - regional city of Ukraine, port on the Black sea. Territory of 160 square kilometers. According to last census the population is 1 129 000. It was based in 1794. After Kiev and Kharkov - Odessa is the biggest city, the industrial, cultural, scientific and resort center of Northern Black Sea Coast. In the cosmopolitan population of the city prevail are Russians, Ukrainians and Jews. Large resort center includes: beaches, numerous night clubs and health resorts.

Climate

Moderately continental and rather humidity. The quantity of sunny days in a year exceeds 290.

Economy

Odessa is the largest marine port of Ukraine. Transporting such products as: corn, sugar, coal, oil products, cement, metals, jute, wood, products of machine-building industry. Based on naval, fishing and whaling fleet. Basic industries are shipbuilding, petroleum refining, engineering, manufacture of metal, food-processing industry, and woodworking, agriculture and chemical industry etc.

Culture

Odessa is proud of the unique architectural and cultural legacies. In the old part of the city you may see; university (founded in 1865), Opera and Ballet Theater (1809), Historical Museum (1825), City Library (1830), Astronomic Observatory (1871), Art Gallery (1898), other educational establishments, theaters and museums, medical university, marine academy and conservatory. Many famous people grew up and lived in Odessa in different times: Alexander Pushkin, Il'ya Mechnikov and Leonid Utesov.

Transport

Odessa’s airport is located not far from the city center, 16km. Operating international and domestic flights.

Railway station is located in the center of the city.
